Photographer Project Idea
Several years ago (read that as more than I want to tell you), a local art gallery in Hampton Roads came up with an idea. The owner, talked to me about it. She had numerous photographs of mine on display and for sale at the time.
The gallery had some of my work and another photographer’s work on display and many of our photographs were drawing a log of attention. We were moving some of our prints and a pretty good clip.
We noticed something though. Much of our work had similar subject matter, but different views, angles, lighting and such. In other words, I had a photo of a particular fishing vessel, so did the other photographer. Mine may have been low light, soft focus and vertically oriented, and his was bright sunshine, crisp and clear and horizontal. There were several pairs like this.
She came up with the idea of sending us specific lists of subjects. The list looked something like this:
Vessel: Flyin’ Fish, Rudee Inlet Marina
Brown Pelican: Virginia Marine Science Center
Sunrise: Virginia Beach
Sunset: Elizabeth River
Lighthouse: Cape Henry
I don’t remember the complete list but it had about 20 subjects on it.
Our tasking was to go out together or separately (we chose together) and photograph the subjects in our own way, and they would be displayed side by side in the gallery with the story of the project printed and displayed along with the photos.
This is open for discussion. Is this something we can do with an online community of photographers? ProAm style?
Please let me know what you think.

I think it sounds like an interesting idea. you lost me with “ProAm style” also… what gallery? still got stuff up there?
@Lorraine
ProAm – Teaming up a Professional Photographer with an Amateur Photographer.
No. The gallery closed about 10 years ago. Beach Gallery on Norfolk Avenue (at Cypress) in Virginia Beach.
Sounds like a Flickr group, to me
(And I mean that in the best possible way.)
Flickr is fun!
And, here is the version of the group I joined…

If you want to do something similar locally, let me know. Maybe there’s even a juried show to come of it.
@Scott
oh ok… *S* sounds like a fun idea… I’d be lugging my 3 kids around with me though… not sure how conducive that would be to a good photo shoot. *S* on the other hand, if I got them to shoot some photos of each location it would add a whole other layer to this concept. *S*
