Ok. Old idea for a new series

July 29th, 2009

So my Church Fronts series never came to fruition. So I’m going to try another.

Starting Saturday, August 1st I will attempt to photograph something, anything and post it. I will repeat that every single day for a year.

I am sure most of these will not be wall hangers. But some may end up that way.

A photograph a day for a year. Let’s see how this goes.

Series: Church Fronts

March 15th, 2009

A couple years ago, an aquaintance was going to travel Virginia and document various old church buildings in writing. When they were build, which denomination started the building, locations and such. There are thousands.

I started a conversation with a mutual friend and was making arrangements to travel with him. I don’t know what happened to the plans but I never followed through with it.

I want to start again. Locally, in Hampton Roads, then slowly, as time and money allow, move outwards.

Look for this series, hopefully starting this spring. There is no way I am going to be able to hit every church of course. What I envision is older church buildings only. Small country churches, inner city and small congregations.

We’ll see how far this one goes.

Photographer Project Idea

March 14th, 2009

Several years ago (read that as more than I want to tell you), a local art gallery in Hampton Roads came up with an idea. The owner, talked to me about it. She had numerous photographs of mine on display and for sale at the time.

The gallery had some of my work and another photographer’s work on display and many of our photographs were drawing a log of attention. We were moving some of our prints and a pretty good clip.

We noticed something though. Much of our work had similar subject matter, but different views, angles, lighting and such. In other words, I had a photo of a particular fishing vessel, so did the other photographer. Mine may have been low light, soft focus and vertically oriented, and his was bright sunshine, crisp and clear and horizontal. There were several pairs like this.

She came up with the idea of sending us specific lists of subjects. The list looked something like this:

Vessel: Flyin’ Fish, Rudee Inlet Marina
Brown Pelican: Virginia Marine Science Center
Sunrise: Virginia Beach
Sunset: Elizabeth River
Lighthouse: Cape Henry

I don’t remember the complete list but it had about 20 subjects on it.

Our tasking was to go out together or separately (we chose together) and photograph the subjects in our own way, and they would be displayed side by side in the gallery with the story of the project printed and displayed along with the photos.

This is open for discussion. Is this something we can do with an online community of photographers? ProAm style?

Please let me know what you think.

Warm – almost summer-like

March 9th, 2009

UPDATE: At 5:30, it was 80 degrees. At 7:30 it was 58. I so want Spring to fully arrive.

I hate days like today. It’s warm, near 80 degrees, sunshine and lots of clear blue sky.

And yet… nothing is green. Everything is still recovering from winter. There are some daffodils and other “bulb” plants sticking up here and there but nothing with much color.

I would imagine it will take off with a vengence in the next couple weeks.

I can’t wait!

Please welcome Kristin Britt!

March 8th, 2009

Scott’s Shots would like to welcome Kristin Britt!  Kristin is a friend of mine from church and is a Photographic Arts student at Tidewater Community College in Portsmouth.

Kristin shows a remarkable eye for the artistic and as a beginning photographer has some really impressive work.

She will be contributing on the photo site until I can talk her into building her own.
